Hawaii Travel: Lanai Vacation Condos
Though not as numerous as in the neighboring islands of Maui or Oahu, condos in Lanai are available and can offer a peaceful and private vacation spot. One of the benefits of vacationing in Lanai is the seclusion of the island and the lack of development. Renting a remote condo might just be the best way to appreciate these benefits. You can even rent condos as part of a package vacation deal–youre not limited to hotel rooms. There are vendors who specialize in package vacations, and have a supply of condos available to rent to you.
For most of the last century, Lanai was covered in pineapples–literally! The Dole family used the island nearly exclusively for pineapple production. In fact, only two percent of the island was notowned by the family. Though this had a detrimental effect on the landscape as it forced the destruction of native forestland, it had the benefit of keeping the island off the tourist radar for years.
Today in Lanai
Today, visitors to the island can enjoy the benefits of the scant development on the island. There are acres of grassland where the plantations once were that offer a great opportunity for horseback riding. There are also numerous hiking trails that present breathtaking vista points for those willing to earn them.
In the southwest corner of the island, youll find the spot where the Red Bull Cliff Diving Championships take place every year. Take a walk to the cliffs and look down at the ocean 90 feet below! Ancient Hawaiian warriors once proved their courage by leaping off these cliffs into the ocean far below.
